Portugal Masters Selections

This week sees the return of stroke play golf to the European Tour in the form of the Portugal Masters,  hosted at The Oceanico Victoria Golf Club.

Past winners over the previous 5 years are Shane, Lowry, Tom Lewis, Richard Green, Lee Westwood and Alvaro Quiros and the latter of these is the most fancied Selection this week. Alvaro Quiros has had a fairly low key season to date but he has just recently started showing signs of a return to form registering a Tied 8th finish at the Italian Open and also a Tied 22nd at the KLM Open in the Netherlands. This course however is likely to suite Quiros far more than those 2, particularly ore so than the Golf Club Torino Course which is notoriously tight. Quiros is a big hitter and can often be wayward off the tee and the fact that he managed to negotiate the Golf Club Torino course so well suggests that his driving is in good shape, and when that is the case he is a dangerous player. The Oceanico Victoria Golf Club course is very open, so will suite Alvaro’s big hitting. Further to this and very significantly, Quiros lives very locally to the course and is actually a member there so will know the course inside out.

Taking the above into consideration it is expected that Quiros will go very close this week and the recommendation is to SELL Alvaro Quiros’s finishing position at 41 with SportingIndex.

The 2nd recommendation this week is Franceso Molinari. Another player who has very solid form here where he has twice finished runner-up, in 2009 and 2010. In 2010 he shot 62 in both the second and fourth rounds so he clearly knows how to go low round this course. He comes here off the back of a good performance in the Seve Trophy where it was his putt that secured the trophy for Continental Europe so he will be high in morale no doubt.

The recommendation is to SELL Francesco Molinari’s Finishing Position at 34 with SportingIndex.

The final selection for the Portugal Masters this week is Felipe Aguilar. A player who has already delivered good profit this year when selected to go close at the Italian Open where he eventually finished 4th after leading during round 2. He also has a good record at the course coming Tied 3rd here in 2011.

The recommendation is to SELL Felipe Aguilar’s Finishing Position at 44 with Sporting Index.
